Will my iPhone alarm play through AirPods or the phone speaker?

Apple says an iPhone Clock alarm sounds through the phone’s built-in speakers as well as connected wired or wireless headphones. Connecting AirPods does not make that alarm private. Test your actual phone and headphones while awake before relying on them overnight.

Does connecting headphones silence the phone speaker?

No. Apple documents both outputs for the iPhone Clock alarm. Music playing only in your headphones does not establish where an alarm will sound. Silent mode and Do Not Disturb also do not silence a normal Clock alarm. This guide concerns Apple’s Clock app; another alarm app can have different requirements.

Can I make a Clock alarm play only in headphones?

Apple’s published Clock instructions do not provide a headphone-only output switch. Do not assume that lowering media volume or switching on Silent mode will create one. If your aim is to avoid waking a roommate, headphones alone are not a dependable privacy setting for this alarm.

Some other alarm apps advertise private alerts. Check the specific app’s current instructions and test with the screen locked, using the headphones and connection you intend to use. We have not verified a third-party headphone-only app or an overnight setup, and do not recommend one here.

Check your setup in a few minutes

  1. Connect your usual headphones and confirm they are connected. Set a comfortable listening level before testing.
  2. Open Clock → Alarms and add a temporary alarm a few minutes ahead. Give it a recognizable label and choose a sound under Sound. Make sure it is not None, then save it.
  3. Lock the phone and wait for that alarm. Note whether you hear the phone speaker, the headphones, or both. A sound preview is not the same test.
  4. Disconnect the headphones and repeat with another temporary alarm, keeping the sound and alert volume the same. Remove the temporary alarms afterward.

This is a suggested comparison, not a physical test we performed. A disconnected or depleted accessory changes the setup, so a successful short test does not guarantee an overnight result.

If the result differs from Apple’s description

First identify the alarm app and selected sound. For Apple Clock, check that Sound is not None and review Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone and Alerts, the volume control in Apple’s cited instructions. Menu labels can vary by version. Our alarm and ringtone volume guide separates ordinary Clock alarms from the Sleep wake-up alarm.

If the phone speaker remains silent with headphones disconnected, try an available built-in alarm sound and record the result. If it fails only with one accessory, record the iPhone model, iOS version, headphone model and connection type for Apple Support. Avoid repeatedly downloading the same sound as a routing fix.

Apple Watch alarms, Sleep wake-up alerts and third-party alarm apps need their own checks. This article does not establish their output behavior. For changing just your next scheduled wake-up, use the next wake-up alarm guide.

Choose a different alarm sound

If you want a ready-made sound, open Ringy, choose an available ringtone and follow the access and installation steps shown. Then use our custom alarm sound guide to select the installed sound for a compatible Clock alarm. Changing the recording does not add a headphone-only output setting.

If you meant an incoming phone call instead of an alarm, follow Bluetooth ringtone troubleshooting. Call alerts, music and alarms are separate tests.
