Change iPhone alarm volume separately from your ringtone

On iOS 27, open Settings → Sounds & Haptics. Under Alarms and Timers, turn off Match Ringtone Volume, then adjust that group’s slider. This lets you choose a different level from incoming calls. If your phone lacks this setting, use the version and wake-up alarm options below.

Choose the volume control for your alarm

Changing an alarm’s sound and changing its loudness are different tasks. If you want a new melody, use our custom alarm sound guide. If the right sound plays but its volume is wrong, start here.

iOS 27: separate alarms and timers from calls

  1. Open Settings → Sounds & Haptics.
  2. Find Alarms and Timers and switch off Match Ringtone Volume.
  3. Move its volume slider to the level you want, then test an alarm.

Apple documents one independent level for alarms and timers together. It is not a separate slider for each individual alarm or a way to give timers a different level from alarms. Alerts and System Sounds has its own matching-volume option if you also want to separate that group from calls.

No Match Ringtone Volume option?

Compare your software version with the version selected in Apple’s linked guide. Its iOS 26 instructions show the shared Ringtone and Alerts slider; the iOS 27 guide documents the separate groups. Do not assume a missing switch means your ringtone file or export failed.

On the shared-volume workflow, open Settings → Sounds & Haptics and adjust Ringtone and Alerts. Apple’s general alarm support article still describes this control. Increasing it can also make incoming calls louder. Use the instructions that match the controls your phone actually shows.

Sleep schedule wake-up alarms have their own control

Apple’s iOS 26 Clock guide already documents a volume slider for the sleep schedule’s wake-up alarm. In Clock → Alarms, tap Change for that wake-up alarm, scroll to Alarm Options and adjust Alarm volume. Save with Change Next Alarm Only for a one-off change, or use the schedule option when you intend to change the recurring schedule.

Check this control separately from an ordinary alarm you added with the plus button. Do not assume changing one type proves the other will be loud enough, or that both expose the same sound choices.

Why the side buttons can be confusing

Apple explains that volume buttons can control different audio depending on what is playing. Turning up a song or a ringtone preview is not a reliable check of your alarm setting. To prevent the buttons from changing alert volume, go to Settings → Sounds & Haptics and disable Change with Buttons; Apple says the buttons then control media playback.

Check a real alarm before relying on it

Our recommended check is to create a near-term test alarm while awake, select an audible sound, save it and confirm it is enabled. Listen at your usual bedside distance. Check repeat days and which alarm you edited. Keep an existing reliable alarm until your changed setup has worked.

If there is no sound at all, check that the alarm’s Sound is not set to None and follow the sound troubleshooting guide. These are recommended checks, not a claim that we tested iOS 27 on your device.

Want a different sound as well?

Open Ringy to find a ringtone, then follow the available access and export steps for that sound. Our iPhone setup guide explains the direct share action where offered and the GarageBand alternative. Select an installed sound in the relevant Clock picker if it is available there. Downloading a tone does not change your phone’s volume settings.
