Ringtone not playing through Bluetooth headphones? What to check

Start by testing a normal incoming call with Bluetooth disconnected, then reconnect your headphones and repeat. A headset can use a different incoming-call alert from your phone’s chosen ringtone. Check call connectivity separately from music playback; selecting a new ringtone does not control every accessory’s alert.

Find out which sound is missing

There are three separate things to check: the alert before you answer, the other person’s voice after you answer, and music or video playback. Write down which one fails. Hearing music through an accessory does not establish that incoming calls work through it.

Use this guide when a tone works on the phone but becomes silent, changes sound or behaves differently with headphones connected. If the phone is silent even without Bluetooth, start with the missing or silent ringtone checklist.

Run a simple before-and-after call test

  1. Disconnect the headphones or car connection temporarily. Keep the phone’s selected ringtone and other settings unchanged.
  2. Ask someone to call your normal phone number. Note whether the phone rings and which sound plays.
  3. Reconnect one accessory and repeat the same call. Note what plays on the phone and what plays in the accessory.
  4. Answer and check whether the caller’s voice reaches the intended device. Test an app call separately if that is the problem you actually have.

This comparison helps isolate the connection from the installed sound. It is a suggested diagnostic test, not a claim that we physically tested your phone and headset combination. Make one change at a time so you can tell what helped.

Why headphones can play a different ringtone

Sony’s WH-CH730N/WH-CH735N manual explicitly describes three possible incoming alerts: a headset tone, the phone’s tone, or a phone tone used for Bluetooth. The choice depends on the connected phone. This is a documented example, not a guarantee that every accessory offers a menu to choose between them.

If the correct custom sound plays on your phone but the headset uses a generic alert, do not repeatedly reinstall the file. Check your exact headset’s calling documentation first. The selected phone ringtone and the accessory’s alert are not necessarily identical.

Android and Pixel: check the call connection

Google’s Pixel troubleshooting instructions distinguish Phone audio from Media audio. In Settings → Connected devices, open the settings beside the accessory; you may first need to open Bluetooth or Saved devices. If Phone audio is offered, enable it for calls. Also check whether another paired device is receiving calls.

Names and available controls vary by phone, Android version and accessory. Do not assume a missing switch means your ringtone file is broken. Consult your manufacturer’s instructions when the documented menu is absent. Basic connection checks include reconnecting Bluetooth, confirming pairing and restarting the devices.

iPhone: distinguish call routing from ringtone selection

Apple’s iOS 26 instructions place Call Audio Routing under Settings → Accessibility → Touch. This controls the destination for phone and FaceTime call audio. It is useful when the conversation goes to the wrong device; Apple’s instructions do not establish it as a universal switch for forcing a custom ringtone into every headset.

For choosing or installing the phone’s tone, follow the iPhone ringtone guide. Keep the two jobs separate when testing.

Cars and app calls need their own check

Google notes that Bluetooth music support does not mean every car supports phone calls. Check the car’s manual and test while parked. Do not generalize a result from ordinary Bluetooth to CarPlay, Android Auto or every calling app.

If normal phone calls work but WhatsApp behaves differently, use the relevant app instructions. Our Samsung WhatsApp ringtone guide covers that separate sound-setting question.

Choose a sound after the connection works

To find a new phone ringtone, open Ringy, select a sound and complete the access and setup steps shown. Check free or paid access in the app. Then confirm the tone in your phone settings and repeat the incoming-call test. Ringy supplies the sound; it does not override an accessory’s own calling behavior.

If the problem remains, record your phone model, OS version, accessory model, calling app and the results with Bluetooth connected and disconnected. Those details are more useful for support than another download of the same ringtone.
