Set different ringtones for work and personal lines on iPhone

On a dual-SIM iPhone with the per-line ringtone option, open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone, choose the first line and select a sound. Go back and choose a different sound for the other line. Apple introduced separate SIM ringtones in iOS 17; older instructions saying this is impossible may describe an earlier iOS version.

Check your two lines first

In Settings → Cellular, check the lines shown below SIMs. Apple’s Dual SIM guide explains how to enable two lines and change their labels. Physical-SIM and eSIM combinations depend on the iPhone model and region. A label such as Work or Personal helps you select the intended number.

This guide assumes you already have two configured phone lines. You do not need to buy another plan or remove an eSIM to change a ringtone. A data-only travel plan is not a substitute for a number that can receive normal phone calls.

Pick a different sound for each number

  1. Open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone.
  2. Choose the first line shown and select its ringtone.
  3. Go back to the line list, choose the other line and select a different ringtone.

Apple’s iOS 17 feature notes confirm separate SIM ringtones. The line-selection sequence is illustrated in the iDownloadBlog walkthrough linked below. Labels and layout can differ on later software; this is not a claim that Ringy tested every iOS release.

Use installed sounds or find two in Ringy

You can choose built-in tones without installing another app. For ready-made alternatives, open Ringy and find two sounds you can easily distinguish. Complete each sound’s available access and export steps before assigning it to a line.

The iPhone ringtone setup guide explains the direct sharing action where offered and GarageBand alternatives. Once both tones appear in the system picker, return to the line-specific selection. An app preview or successful export alone does not confirm which number will use the tone. Check current free or paid access in Ringy before exporting.

If you do not see two ringtone choices

Check your iOS version under Settings → General → About and confirm that both intended lines are enabled in Cellular settings. Separate SIM ringtones were introduced with iOS 17, so do not expect identical controls on earlier software. If the option is still absent, check Apple’s guidance for your model and version rather than repeatedly reinstalling the ringtone.

A ringtone assigned to a contact answers a different question: who is calling, rather than which number they called. See contact-specific ringtones. Also keep text alerts and app calls separate; this guide does not establish per-line SMS or WhatsApp sound behavior.

Test both numbers while the phone is idle

Our recommended test is to ask someone without a custom contact ringtone to call each number separately. Check the displayed line and listen for its intended sound. Repeat after assigning your second tone. Keep your previous selections noted so you can restore them.

Do this with neither line already in a call: Apple documents additional carrier, Wi-Fi Calling and data-setting requirements for receiving a call while the other line is busy. That is a call-delivery issue, not proof that a ringtone file failed.

If both lines are silent, follow the silent ringtone checklist. Selecting a distinct tone is not an instruction to bypass Silent mode or Focus. For a Samsung phone, use the separate Samsung dual-SIM guide.
