Set a custom vibration for calls or one contact on iPhone

For all calls, open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone → Haptics. Choose a pattern or tap Create New Vibration to tap out your own rhythm. For just one caller, start in their contact card instead. You can keep the ringtone you already use.

In this guide
  1. Choose the vibration for incoming calls
  2. Give one person a different pattern
  3. The preview works but the call doesn't vibrate
  4. Keep the pattern and change the sound

Choose the vibration for incoming calls

Open the ringtone settings, then open Haptics inside the ringtone picker. Choose a built-in rhythm first if you want a quick comparison. To make one you can recognize by touch, select Create New Vibration and tap the screen in a short sequence. Try two quick taps, a pause and a third tap. Save the pattern and make sure it is selected before you leave.

This changes the rhythm for the call alert. It doesn't turn your song's beat into a vibration, and you don't need an audio file, a ringtone download or GarageBand. To go back, choose another pattern in the same picker.

Give one person a different pattern

  1. Open Contacts, choose the person, then tap Edit.
  2. Choose Ringtone for their phone calls or Text Tone for their messages.
  3. Open Haptics and select or create the pattern. Return to the previous screen and confirm your changes with Done; finish saving the contact card.

For example, you can give a family member a distinctive buzz when they call without changing how their texts feel. If you also want a different audible sound, follow the contact ringtone steps.

The preview works but the call doesn't vibrate

Go back one level to Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Haptics. This control decides when vibrations play; the picker inside Ringtone decides which rhythm plays. Select the behavior for the ring or silent mode you actually use. A setting that disables haptics in silent mode can explain why a saved pattern feels fine in the picker but is absent when your phone is silenced.

Have the person call you once in that mode, then compare a call from someone with no custom pattern. If only texts feel different, reopen the contact and check whether you edited Text Tone instead of Ringtone. To let a particular caller interrupt Silent mode, use the separate Emergency Bypass guide.

Keep the pattern and change the sound

If you also want a new ringtone, open Ringy to choose a sound, then follow the iPhone setup guide. If you need a visible alert instead, see how to flash the screen or camera light for calls.
