Let one contact ring through Silent mode on iPhone
For a contact whose calls should sound even when your iPhone is silenced, open Contacts → their name → Edit → Ringtone and enable Emergency Bypass. Text Tone has a separate setting. If you only want an exception during a particular Focus, review that Focus’s People settings instead.
In this guide
Choose the exception you actually want
A distinctive ringtone identifies a caller. A sound exception controls whether they can interrupt a silenced phone. Decide whether you want an exception to Silent mode, or only to a particular Focus such as Work. You do not need to download a ringtone or install an app to configure these controls.
Enable Emergency Bypass for a contact
- Open Contacts and select the person.
- Tap Edit → Ringtone.
- Turn on Emergency Bypass and save your changes.
Apple documents this for sound and vibration when the phone or notifications are silenced. Configure Text Tone separately if you also want message alerts. To remove an exception, return to that same control and turn it off.
Allow someone during one Focus
Go to Settings → Focus → the relevant Focus → People. Under Allow Notifications From, add the intended person and review the call options. Check whether you are editing an allow list or a silence list. Apple also documents an optional repeated-call exception for two or more calls from the same person within three minutes.
Do not assume adding a Favorite has configured the separate Emergency Bypass control. Inspect the actual settings and test the combination you use.
Give that caller a recognizable sound
In the contact’s Edit → Ringtone field, select a sound already available on the phone. The separate Text Tone field changes message sound. Our contact ringtone guide covers sound assignment without changing interruption rules.
For a different sound, open Ringy, choose an exact title and complete the access and export steps shown. Then return to the contact’s ringtone picker. Follow our iPhone setup guide for the direct share action where available or the GarageBand alternative. Ringy supplies sound choices; the phone’s contact and Focus settings control the exception.
Test the actual phone call
Our recommended check is to ask that person to call your normal number from the number saved on their contact card. First test with your usual phone settings. Then test the particular Silent mode or Focus combination you intended to allow. Listen for the chosen sound rather than relying on an app preview.
If you enabled a text exception, test a message separately. Record which settings worked, and restore any test-only changes afterward. Do not treat this as a test of WhatsApp, another caller’s number, or every device version. No physical-device Emergency Bypass call test was performed for this guide.
If calls still go to voicemail
Changing a tone will not resolve every call-delivery issue. Apple’s current troubleshooting guide checks active Focus settings and Settings → Apps → Phone, including unknown-caller screening and carrier-supported Wi-Fi Calling. Review those only as relevant to your situation; allowing all unknown callers is a broader choice than allowing one saved contact.
If the call appears but is inaudible, use our silent ringtone checklist. Check the selected tone and ringtone level before exporting the same sound again. A working preview and a completed download are useful checks, but neither establishes that this contact’s incoming call will ring.
