How to make your phone ring longer before voicemail

Changing the ringtone file does not extend the time before your mobile network sends an unanswered call to voicemail. Check your carrier’s no-answer ring-delay options for your line. First confirm whether the call actually reaches voicemail or the sound simply becomes quiet while the incoming call stays on screen.

Ringtone length and ring time are different

The audio file determines the sound you hear. The no-answer delay determines when an unanswered call is forwarded. Samsung directs people who want more rings before voicemail to their network provider. Editing a longer song or downloading another ringtone does not change that network setting.

If the incoming-call screen stays visible while the sound stops, investigate the recording and phone sound settings first. If the caller reaches your voicemail greeting too soon, investigate the ring delay. Our ringtone trimming guide covers editing the recording itself.

Check what happens on a normal call

  1. Ask someone you know to call your mobile number. Use a normal phone call rather than an internet calling app.
  2. Leave the call unanswered without pressing buttons to silence or decline it. Note when your phone first alerts and when the caller reaches voicemail.
  3. Repeat with an available built-in ringtone at a comfortable volume. Keep the same caller and mobile line so you can compare the result.

This is a suggested diagnostic, not a call test we performed. Counting the musical phrases in two different ringtones is not a reliable comparison of elapsed time. For a dual-SIM phone, identify which number received each call.

Use instructions for your carrier and country

Look for your provider’s official help on ring time before voicemail, no-answer delay or conditional call forwarding. Ask whether that delay can be changed on your particular line and how to restore its previous setting.

  • Vodafone UK. Its mobile ring-time instructions describe delays from 5 to 30 seconds in five-second steps and a confirmation message after changing the setting. Follow that provider’s current sequence if it applies to your service.
  • Telekom Germany. Its Mobilbox instructions document a different carrier-specific control sequence. Use the instructions for that network rather than copying Vodafone’s voicemail destination.

These examples do not establish what another network, reseller or country supports. A fixed-line answering-machine setting is also a different service. If your provider does not support a longer delay, a ringtone app cannot add that network option.

What if an iPhone goes straight to voicemail?

Apple distinguishes Live Voicemail from carrier voicemail. Its iOS 26 documentation says Silence Unknown Callers can send unknown numbers to Live Voicemail without ringing first. When the phone is off or outside network coverage, carrier voicemail may take the call instead. Compare a known caller with the affected number and review the relevant Phone settings before assuming the timer is too short.

Availability varies by carrier and region. This guide does not promise that one carrier setting changes every Live Voicemail scenario. For a phone that never rings audibly, start with silent or missing ringtone checks.

Confirm a change and choose a noticeable sound

After a provider-supported change, repeat the unanswered-call test on the same line and confirm the caller can still leave voicemail. If the result is unexpected, use the provider’s documented restore steps or contact its support with your line, phone model and observed timing.

Once the call timing is understood, open Ringy if you want a sound with a clearer opening. Follow its access and setup steps, then test an incoming call. A recognizable start may help you notice the call sooner; it does not lengthen the network’s waiting time.
