Caller tune vs ringtone: which sound are you changing?

A ringtone is the sound your phone plays when someone calls you. A caller tune, also called a ringback tune, is the sound the person calling you hears while waiting for you to answer. Change your ringtone in phone settings; manage a caller tune through the mobile provider that supplies that service.

In this guide
  1. First, check who hears the sound
  2. Change the sound on your own phone
  3. Remove a song that callers hear
  4. Can I use my own recording as a caller tune?
  5. What about a different sound for one contact?
  6. Check the result on the correct side of the call

First, check who hears the sound

  • Your phone rings with a song: change the ringtone selected on that phone.
  • People calling you hear a song: check your number’s caller-tune service with your carrier.
  • You hear music when calling somebody else: ask that person whether they have a caller tune. Changing your own ringtone does not control their service.

For example, Jio says its JioTune plays to the caller before the call is answered. The phone’s selected ringtone is a separate setting. To identify your situation, ask someone to call your number and describe what they hear before you answer. Use a normal phone call first, rather than an app call with its own sound behavior.

Change the sound on your own phone

On iPhone, open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone and choose an available tone. On Pixel, use the ringtone options under Settings → Sound & vibration. Android menu names vary; our Android setup guide links to Samsung and Pixel instructions.

For a ready-made ringtone, open Ringy, choose a sound and follow its setup or export steps. If you already have an audio file, see the iPhone file-sharing and GarageBand options or Android instructions. Ringy’s ringtone setup changes your phone’s sound; it is not an activation route for your carrier’s caller-tune service.

Remove a song that callers hear

Identify the provider for the phone number receiving the calls, then find its official caller-tune or ringback-service settings. Deleting a local MP3 or changing the phone’s ringtone is not the same as cancelling that service. Check the provider’s confirmation after making a change.

Jio example, verified October 31, 2026: open MyJio, choose JioTunes under Quick Links, find the current tune and select Deactivate. Jio documents a confirmation pop-up after submission. Its official help also lists SMS and telephone alternatives; use the linked instructions if the app route is unavailable.

These steps apply to JioTunes, not every mobile network. For another provider, use that provider’s support page and current account controls. Availability, cancellation steps and charges depend on the service and country; this guide does not promise a free service or a universal cancellation code.

Can I use my own recording as a caller tune?

A file that works as a phone ringtone does not establish that a carrier accepts it as a caller tune. Jio describes choosing from its service catalogue. Check whether your own provider explicitly supports personal uploads, and which files and permissions it requires, before preparing a recording for that purpose.

If you mean a recording that plays on your phone when it rings, follow our voice-recording ringtone guide. That is a different workflow from supplying audio to a telephone network.

What about a different sound for one contact?

A contact ringtone helps you recognize who is calling. On iPhone, open Contacts → the person → Edit → Ringtone. Our contact ringtone guide covers phone-side assignment.

If you want only that caller to hear a particular song while they wait, ask your carrier whether its caller-tune service offers individual caller assignments. Do not assume the contact’s ringtone field configures that network feature.

Check the result on the correct side of the call

After changing a phone ringtone, listen to the receiving phone during a test call. After changing a caller tune, ask the caller what they hear and check the provider’s confirmation. If the local ringtone is still missing, use ringtone troubleshooting; if callers still hear the old song, contact the service provider with the affected number and change confirmation.
