Custom ringtones on an older iPhone

First check your iOS version and whether the tone is already installed. Older iPhones can use installed tones, but a new audio file may need GarageBand or another compatible export route.

Separate three compatibility checks

Your phone model, iOS version and app version are different constraints. A current tutorial may show a system action that is missing from your OS. Likewise, an old tutorial may recommend a version of GarageBand that the App Store no longer offers to your device. Check Settings → General → About before following a version-specific walkthrough.

Use an installed tone first

Look in Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone. If the custom name is already there, select it; exporting another copy is unnecessary. If a purchased Apple tone is missing, use Apple’s purchased-tone recovery option where offered. That purchase is separate from Ringy access.

For a new sound file

Apple’s documented on-device method uses GarageBand. Check that you can install or open a compatible version, then follow the export guide linked below. Work from an audio file that is downloaded and unprotected. A ringtone share webpage identifies a sound; it is not itself an audio file to import.

If the direct Use as Ringtone action is not present, repeating the same share action does not add it to your OS. Keep your original audio and check compatibility before buying an app or changing your phone. We have not validated a current Windows or Mac transfer procedure for every older iOS release, so this guide does not substitute an untested iTunes recipe.

When asking for help

Include the exact phone model, iOS version, Ringy version, source-file type and the step where the process stops. “The tone is missing” can mean a missing catalogue entry, an uncompleted export, or an installed sound that was never selected. Those need different fixes.
